When was the last time you checked your power steering fluid? If the answer is never, you’re not alone—but dirty fluid can lead to stiff steering, pump noise, and eventual failure. A full flush and replacement is a simple job that can restore steering feel and protect your components.
At WOT Performance Parts, we’re all about keeping your performance car in peak shape, down to the last drop of fluid. Contact us today for more information.
Why Power Steering Fluid Matters
Your power steering system relies on hydraulic pressure to assist with turning the wheel. Over time, the fluid becomes contaminated with debris and moisture, reducing its effectiveness and damaging the pump, rack, and lines.
Signs you need a fluid flush:
· Whining or groaning when turning
· Heavier steering feel
· Dirty, brown, or black fluid
· Foaming in the reservoir
How Often Should You Replace It?
Check your manual, but most cars should flush every 50,000–100,000 miles, or sooner under heavy use.
How To Flush Your Power Steering Fluid
1. Locate The Reservoir
Usually near the front of the engine bay, marked with a steering wheel icon or “Power Steering.”
2. Siphon Out Old Fluid
Use a fluid extractor or turkey baster to remove as much old fluid as possible.
3. Disconnect Return Line
Disconnect the low-pressure return hose and place it into a catch container.
4. Turn The Engine On Briefly
With the front wheels off the ground, run the engine and turn the wheel side to side. This pushes out old fluid.
5. Refill With New Fluid
Use the correct, OEM-recommended power steering fluid, and top off the reservoir as needed.
6. Bleed The System
Turn the wheel lock-to-lock several times with the engine running to remove air bubbles. Recheck fluid level.
